Double anniversary for Valckenberg
Readers letter (so far 0)
The oldest family-run wine export house in Germany, P.J. Valckenberg, is celebrating a double anniversary in 2008: 200 years ago the company founder acquired the Liebfrauenstift-Kirchenstück vineyard site in Worms, and 100 years ago the company established the oldest branded wine in Germany, the Madonna Liebfraumilch.
Today the Liebfrauenstift-Kirchenstück vineyard is considered to be a "particularly privileged site" (rating in "Wine Atlas Germany 2007"), and one of the best sites in Rheinhessen. One cannot sing the same praises of the Liebfraumilch wines from the 222-year-old company P. J. Valckenberg, but the wine is still successful, primarily in Asian markets. (WF)
