Wine-growing region (GI) in the federal state of New South Wales in Asutralia, it i spart of the Big Rivers zone. It is located 500 kilometres west of Sydney in the Murrumbidgee Valley; it is also known as the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area (MIA) or also Griffith-Riverina, after the principal town. Around two thirds of the wine produced in New South Wales originates from here. The extremely hot, dry summers make irrigation essential, this is drawn, among others, from the Murray River. The vineyard area totals 5.200 hectares. 75% of this area is planted with white varieties, mainly Chardonnay, Sémillon, Riesling, Gewürztraminer and Trebbiano, amny of the wines are sold in bag-in-box presentations. The leading red varieties are Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Table grapes are also produced. Sherry-style dessert wines are a speciality of the region. Well-known producers include De Bortoli (famous for sweet botrytis wines), Lindemans, McWilliams, Miranda, Orlando, Riverina Wines, Wilton Estate and Yellow Tail (Casella).
