Wine-growing region (GI) located north of Canberra in the federal state of New South Wales in Australia, it is part of the Central Ranges zone. The region is named after the town of the same name, the town itself is remarkable for the fact that its population is made up of citizens with 50 different nationalities. The wine-growing region was only established in the 1970’s, and is growing rapidly. The climate is hot and dry, but there is also a danger of spring frosts. The vienyard area totals around 800 hectares, the vineyards are located in the gentle vallies of the Belabula River and the Lachlan River. The most important red varieties planted are Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, the leading white varieties are Chardonnay, Sémillon, Verdelho and Gewürztraminer. Well-known producers include Arrowfield, Brokenwood, Cowra Estate, Hungerford Hill, Richmond Grove, Rothbury Estate and Windowrie.
