Wine-growing reion (GI) in the federal state of New South Wales in Australia, it is part of the Central Ranges zone. It is named after the principal town of the same name, in the language of the aborigines the name means “nest in the hills”, and refers to its location, surrounded by hills. Viticulture has been carried on here without interruption since 1856. The vineyard area totals around 800 hectares, the vineyards are located at an altitude of 500 metres above sea level. The most important red varieties planted are Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, the leading white varieties are Chardonnay, Sémillon and Verdelho. The climate is hot and dry, and irrigation is essential, spring frosts are a threat. A large portion of the production is delivered to producers in the Hunter Valley region, located 140 kilometres to the east, the wines are very similar to those of the Hunter Valley. Well-known producers include Botobolar Vineyard, Craigmoor, Harris, Huntington, Miramar Wines, Montrose Wines, Rosemount Estate and Thistle Hill.
