Wine-growing region (GI) located 200 kilometres southeast of Melbourne in the federal state of Victoria in Austrlia, part of the Central Victoria zone. It is named after the former governor Sir George Gipps (1791-1847), and is further divided into East Gippsland and South Gippsland. The principal town is Glengarry. The climate is moderate with relatively good rainfall and humidity. The most important red varieties planted are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Shiraz, the leading white varieties are Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. There are 15 producers in the region, the best-known include Bass Phillip, Nicholson River and Wa-De-Lock Vineyards.
