Wine-growing region (GI) in the federal state of Western Australia, it i spart of the Greater Perth zone, and is a sub-district of the Swan District. It lies to the northeast of the city of Perth. This is one of the hottest wine-growing regions in Australia. Viticulture was influenced by Italian, Yogoslav and English immigrants. The Olive Farm estate established by Thomas Waters in 1829 is the oldest winery in Australia to remain in uninterrupted operation. Around 1970, grapes from this region still accounted for 90% of the production volume of Western Australia, the figure today is only 15%. The vineyard area totals 250 hectares. Mainly white wines are produced here, from the following varieties: Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Muscadelle and Verdelho. The most important red varieties palnted are Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. The wines are frequently sold as blends. There are around 30 wienries, the best-known of which include Jane Brook, Houghton Wines (half owned by Hardy), Lamont, Olive Farm and Westfield.
