  Limestone Coast - Padthaway

Wine-growing region (GI) in the federal state of South Asutralia in Australia, it i spart of the Limestone Coast zone. It is named after the town of the same name, and is sometimes also called Keppoch. The name is derived from the aborigine word for “good water”. Padthaway lies to the north of the more famous Coonawarra region, and is sometimes described as the twin of that area, as it features a similar soil structure of terra rossa on a limestone-rich sub-soil. The climate is sunny and dry with few rainy days, so irrigation is essential. This is a young wine-growing region, Seppelt was the first to establish vineyards here in 1963. The vienyard area now totals 2.800 hectares. The most important red varieties planted are Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir, the leading white varieties are Chardonnay, Sémillon and Riesling. Padthaway is primarily a grape supplier for large producers in other regions. Well-known producers include Hardy, Lindemans, Padthaway Estate, Seppelt and Wynns.
