Most northerly wine-growing region (GI) in the federal state of South Asutralia in Australia, located northwest of the Barossa Valley. The sub-regions are Auburn, Clare, Hill River, Polish Hill River, Sevenhill and Watervale. It is among the oldest wine-growing regions in the country, the first winery, Sevenhill Cellars, was founded here in 1851. The hilly terrain provides a slightly cooler climate, however it is also dry, making irrigation essential, and resulting in fairly low yields. The most important white varieties are Riesling and Sémillon, the leading red varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Shiraz. Riesling produces particularly good quality here, and sweet botrytis versions are also produced. The importance of this variety is documented by the 27-kilometre „Riesling Trail“ for hikers and cyclists, this goes from Auburn to Clare führt. Well-known producers include Eldrige, Grosset, Knappstein, Leasingham, Mitchell, Paulett´s and Pikes.
