Wine-growing region (GI) in the federal state of Victoria in Australia, it is part of the Central Ranges zone. It is named after the Murray River and the Darling River. It overlaps with the Big Rivers region in the neighbouring state of New South Wales (and therefore is also listed there). The region stretches along the border of the two federal states along the Murray River from Echuca to Mildura. The region has a hot and dry continental climate, irrigation is essential. The basis for this was created by the Canadian Chaffey brothers in the 1880's (see also under Mildara Blass). The vineyard area totals 3.200 hectares, most of the vineyards were established around the city of Mildura. The area is planted with the red varieties Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, as well as with the white varieties Chardonnay, Colombard and Chenin Blanc. Large quantities of table grapes are also produced. Well-known producers include Deakin Estate, Farrell Estate, Chateau Mildara, Roberts Estate Wines, Stanley Wine Company, Tall Poppy Wines and Zilzie Wines.
