Wine-growing region (GI) in the federal state of Victoria in Australia, it is part of the Port Philip zone, and is located to the north of Melbourne. The principle towns are Lancefield and Sunbury. Wine has been grown here since 1968. The climate is characterised by strong winds, and is one of the coolest in Australia. The soils are of volcanic origin, but show great variation. The vineyard area totals 150 hectares. The most important red varieties planted are Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, the leading white varieties are Chardonnay and Riesling. Sparkling wines are also produced. Well-known-producers include Bindi, Cleveland, Cobaw Ridge, Cope-Williams, Craiglee Vineyards, Hanging Rock, Knights Granite Hills, Portree and Virgin Hills.
