Wine-growing region (GI) in the federal state of Western Australia in Australia, the principal town is Mount Barker. It is part of the South West Australia zone, and is sub-divided as follows: Albany, Denmark, Frankland River, Mount Barker and Porongurup. The landscape is characterised by the proliferation of eucalyptus trees. This is the coolest and most southerly region in West Australia, which otherwise is quite hot. The cool climate resembles that in Central Europe. Vineyards are widely scattered, and total some 1.100 hectares. The most important red varieties planted are Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Malbec, Pinot Noir and Merlot, the leading white varieties are Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling. There are around 25 wineries in the region. Well-known producers include Alkoomi, Chatsfield, Forst Hill, Frankland Estate, Galafrey, Goundrey, Howard Park, Jingalla Porongurup, Karrivale, Old Kent River, Pattersons, Plantaganet and Wignall´s King River.
